| . From one spot on one page Here!, you can visit a lot of different webpages at the same time. You can do this by simultaneously opening several windows on one screen. A lot of people would like to use this feature, but are a little hazy about how. We'll try to clear things up on this page. First, go to any page in Here! that has a list of search guides. Almost every page either has one or is a click from one that does (click on our logo or see the links at the bottom of each page). We suggest that, for the greatest number of windows, you use Search Guides & Portals or the list on any Here! homepage. Although the length and/or the appearance may vary from page to page, such a list will look something like this: Now select any three of these. As each window opens, minimize it to your taskbar. When you've opened the third window from the list above, click on the buttons to the other two on your taskbar. All three will be on your screen. Bring whichever one you want to the front (or top) by simply clicking on its title bar, at the top of the window, or on its button on the taskbar. Or put whichever two you're not viewing on your taskbar by minimizing them; either one is waiting there, ready for you to use onscreen by clicking on its taskbar button. You can put all, some, or none of these sites either on your taskbar or on your screen. You can resize each window appropriately and place each window on one third of the screen, lining them up together. If you want to view a site on the full screen, maximize it. When finished, reduce or restore it. It'll shrink to its third of the screen and the other two will be waiting right where you left them. Play around with these sites, maybe a couple more, perhaps even a few more, to get the feel of doing this and to get a good idea of the possibilities, the options, of how many places you can go at once. Here are a couple of practical illustrations for specific searches. You can learn, or clarify, by doing. You may want to print hardcopy of this page. With the windows that'll be popping open, you then won't have to keep moving stuff around to see the instructions. First, let's say you want to shop for a bra at three different stores at the same time. Comparison shop. Open AltaVista from Here!, enter Spiegel in the search box, then click Search or hit Enter. From your list of results, click on Spiegel. Navigate the Spiegel site to bras. Minimize this window to your taskbar. Open Lycos from Here!, enter Macy's in the search box, then click Search or hit Enter. From your list of results, click on Macy's. Navigate the Macy's site to bras. Minimize this window to your taskbar also. Finally, open Yahoo! from Here!, enter Bloomingdale's in the search box, then click Search or hit Enter. The results here look a little different but are heading the same direction. Find Bloomingdale's down the Yahoo! page, then click on it. Navigate Bloomingdale's site to bras. Now click on Spiegel then Macy's on your taskbar. All three windows for all three bra departments at the three separate stores will be on your screen at the same time. Simply move among the windows or resize each and move them to where you want on the screen, to compare the bras of Spiegel, Macy's, and Bloomingdale's. Meanwhile you remain Here!, at the same spot on the same page, where you can choose a couple of more search guides if you'd care to also check out Victoria's Secret (via LookSmart Here!) and JC Penney (via Google Here!). Your search, of course, needn't be for bras. You can use this method to search for anything, and be poking around several places at once. If you're searching something very specific, usually something with a name (e.g., a company, an organization, an institution), use the search boxes or search engines of the various search guides. If you prefer to browse, you can simultaneously sift through the various search guides' directories, too. Or if your favorite search guide is a little slow to connect, search one of the other ones, either instead of your favorite one or while you're waiting for your favorite one to finish connecting. One final note: you're not limited to search guides. Simultaneously visit different health or travel sites, or different entertainment or computer-related sites that are listed and linked Here! Sounds strange, we know, but when you're Here!, you can be all over the web at once. |
